South Africa edged Afghanistan in a dramatic Group D clash at the T20 World Cup on Wednesday, prevailing in a rare second Super Over after the match ended level at the end of regulation.
Afghanistan looked set to seal victory in normal time, but Fazalhaq Farooqi was run out with one ball remaining, leaving the scores tied at 187 and forcing the contest into a tense, double Super Over finish.

Afghanistan posted 17 in the first Super Over and appeared poised to seal victory when Fazalhaq Farooqi restricted South Africa to 11 with one ball remaining. But Tristan Stubbs swung the momentum again, launching a six off the final delivery to level the scores and force a second tie-breaker.
South Africa seized the initiative in the second Super Over, piling up 23 as David Miller and Stubbs combined for three towering sixes.
Keshav Maharaj then struck immediately, claiming a wicket and delivering two dot balls to leave Afghanistan needing 24 from four deliveries — effectively four sixes.
Rahmanullah Gurbaz nearly delivered the improbable. The opener, who had earlier hammered 84 from 42 balls in Afghanistan’s chase of 187-6, smashed three successive sixes to reduce the equation to six off the final ball. A wide from Maharaj cut the target to five from one and raised the prospect of yet another Super Over.

Maharaj, however, held his nerve. Gurbaz was caught at backward point off the next delivery, ending a breathless contest.
Lungi Ngidi, who took 3-26 in regulation and bowled the first Super Over, was named player of the match.
“I’ve lost so much weight today. I’ve never been that stressed in my life in a cricket game,” Ngidi said. “To win two Super Overs, with our hitters striking it like that — I’m very happy.”
Afghanistan, meanwhile, have now lost both of their Group D matches — following an opening defeat to New Zealand — and face an uphill battle to reach the Super Eights from a pool featuring three higher-ranked sides. Only the top two teams from each of the four groups advance to the next stage.
