Col. Edith Nakalema Completes Mega Cathedral Project as Family Commemorates One Year Since Rev. Sserwadda’s Passing.

Thousands Gather to Mark First Anniversary of Rev. Eliasaph Sserwadda

MBARARA, Uganda — Thousands of mourners and well-wishers on Sunday gathered to commemorate the first anniversary of the passing of renowned evangelist Rev. Eliasaph Sserwadda, fondly known as “Omuburizi Taata,” celebrating a life defined by unwavering faith, love and over 75 years of dedicated service. Rev Sserwadda was the father of Col Edith Nakalema , Head of State House Anti-corruption Unit.

The memorial event drew an overwhelming outpouring of tributes from across Uganda, reflecting the far-reaching spiritual and social impact of the late cleric, who devoted his life to evangelism and community transformation.

Speaking at the commemoration, family members described the large turnout as a living testimony to Rev. Sserwadda’s enduring legacy. “He touched souls across Uganda, and they came to say: ‘We remember. We are grateful. We carry your legacy forward,’” the family said.

The ceremony was attended by high-profile leaders from government, the church, academia and the security forces, underscoring the national significance of Rev. Sserwadda’s life and ministry.

Among the dignitaries present was the Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Thomas Tayebwa, who offered words of comfort to the bereaved family. Several Cabinet Ministers and Heads of Government Agencies also attended, highlighting what speakers described as recognition of faithful service rendered even in the “smallest corner.”

The Archbishop of the Church of Uganda, His Grace Dr. Stephen Samuel Kaziimba Mugalu, delivered a message of hope, while Archbishop Henry Luke Orombi, a long-time spiritual father to the family, joined other senior clergy in honoring the late preacher’s life. Ten bishops from across the country attended, reflecting the fellowship Rev. Sserwadda cherished throughout his ministry.

In a show of interfaith solidarity, the Mufti of Uganda, His Eminence Sheikh Shaban Ramadhan Mubaje, delegated the First Deputy Mufti, Sheikh Muhammad Ali Waiswa, to represent him at the event.

Members of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF), including senior officers and soldiers, also attended in solidarity with the family, alongside vice chancellors from both public and private universities. Speakers noted that Rev. Sserwadda strongly believed in education as a transformative gift, even in times when he had limited personal resources.

Friends and believers traveled from various regions of the country — from Kashari to Kampala, Ankole to Arua — filling the venue with hymns, prayers and testimonies of how the late preacher’s ministry had shaped their lives.

A key highlight of the commemoration was gratitude expressed to all who contributed to the construction of All Saints Kanyeganyegye Church, described as Rev. Sserwadda’s final wish. Family members confirmed that the church now stands completed, symbolizing the continuation of his spiritual legacy.

Rev. Sserwadda was remembered for his oft-repeated declaration: “Yesu wenka namara” — “Jesus alone is enough.”

As tributes concluded, the gathering echoed that message, affirming faith and unity as central pillars of the late preacher’s enduring influence.

Rev. Eliasaph Sserwadda is survived by his children and extended family. He is remembered as a devoted servant of God whose life of evangelism and compassion left an indelible mark on communities across Uganda.
