Goldman Sachs’ chief legal officer, Kathy Ruemmler, has resigned after newly disclosed documents shed light on her past relationship with the late financier and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

The resignation follows the release of additional investigative materials by the United States Department of Justice, which detail exchanges between Ruemmler and Epstein. According to the files, she accepted gifts from him, advised him on reputation management, and at one point referred to him as akin to an older brother.

Goldman Sachs Chief Executive David Solomon confirmed on Thursday that Kathy Ruemmler will resign from the investment bank, saying he respected her decision.

“Throughout her tenure, Kathy has been an extraordinary general counsel, and we are grateful for her contributions and sound advice on a wide range of consequential legal matters for the firm,” Solomon said in a statement provided to Al Jazeera.

“As one of the most accomplished professionals in her field, Kathy has also been a mentor and friend to many of our people, and she will be missed,” he added.
In an interview with the Financial Times on Thursday, Ruemmler — who previously served as White House counsel under former US President Barack Obama — said she would step down as chief legal officer and general counsel at the end of June.

Ruemmler told the newspaper that media scrutiny of her past relationship with Jeffrey Epstein, who died in prison in 2019 while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges, had become a “distraction”.
She has previously expressed regret over having known Epstein and has denied providing him with legal representation or advocating on his behalf to any third party.

Also on Thursday, police in Norway searched properties linked to former Prime Minister Thorbjørn Jagland as part of a corruption investigation examining the politician’s associations with Jeffrey Epstein.
