Wolves’ Revival Shocks Liverpool as Everton Cruise at Home

LIVERPOOL, England, March 3 (Reuters) – Bottom club Wolverhampton Wanderers boosted their survival hopes with a dramatic last-gasp 2-1 victory over Liverpool at a rocking Molineux on Tuesday, dealing a significant blow to Arne Slot’s side in the race for a top-five finish.

A largely dull contest sprang to life in the closing stages when Rodrigo Gomes fired the hosts in front. Liverpool responded quickly, with Mohamed Salah equalising for the visitors with his first Premier League goal since November.

But Wolves had the final say, snatching victory deep into stoppage time to spark wild celebrations among the home fans and offer fresh hope of a remarkable escape from relegation.

A deflected effort from Andre wrong-footed goalkeeper Alisson Becker in the 94th minute, sealing a second successive victory for Wolves after their home win over Aston Villa on Friday. Manager Rob Edwards celebrated with a wild sprint down the touchline.

Elsewhere, Everton ended a seven-match winless run at their new Hill Dickinson Stadium with a 2-0 victory over Burnley, boosting their hopes of European qualification.

Leeds United’s relegation fears deepened after a 1-0 home defeat by Sunderland on Tuesday.

AFC Bournemouth and Brentford played out a 0-0 draw — a result that lifted Bournemouth into the top half while leaving Brentford seventh.

Wolves had looked doomed after collecting just two points from their opening 18 matches — the worst start in Premier League history — but they have suddenly been re-energised.

They remain bottom with 16 points from 30 games, still 11 points adrift of safety, but where there was once only despair and gloom, pride has been restored and a faint glimmer of hope has emerged — even if relegation still appears likely.

“Whatever position you’re in, beating Liverpool is always something to savour,” Rob Edwards told Sky Sports, after his side — who also held leaders Arsenal to a draw last month — delivered a dramatic result.
“It was a massive night for us. We’re working hard to build momentum and change the narrative. The players are showing fight, spirit and real quality. We’re competing with everyone now, and there’s a genuine belief we’re moving in the right direction.”
The sides will meet again on Friday in the FA Cup fifth round.

It marked the fifth time this season that Liverpool have been undone in stoppage time, leaving Arne Slot’s side fifth on 48 points — three behind Aston Villa and Manchester United, who play on Wednesday, and three ahead of Chelsea, who could leapfrog them by beating Villa.

“It was down to ourselves. We were slow, predictable and sloppy in possession,” captain Virgil van Dijk said.

A first-half header from James Tarkowski and a second-half effort by Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall secured eighth-placed Everton their first home win in three months, lifting them to within two points of Chelsea.

Everton’s departure from their historic Goodison Park home to a modern arena on the banks of the River Mersey has strengthened the club’s finances, but victories have not always followed.
This time, however, David Moyes’s side made light work of second-from-bottom Burnley.

Centre-back James Tarkowski opened the scoring against his former club in the 32nd minute, thumping home a header from James Garner’s inswinging cross. The hosts doubled their advantage on the hour when Iliman Ndiaye released Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, who lofted a neat finish over Martin Dúbravka.

Idrissa Gueye came close to a third with a curling effort that struck the crossbar. Burnley’s 18th league defeat of the campaign left them eight points from safety with nine matches remaining and only three points above in-form Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Elsewhere, 15th-placed Leeds United missed the chance to move nine points clear of 18th-placed West Ham United, falling 1-0 at home to Sunderland. The visitors secured victory through a second-half penalty from Habib Diarra at a noisy Elland Road.

Leeds had earlier seen Joe Rodon have a goal ruled out for offside shortly before Sunderland were awarded their penalty following a VAR review for handball by Ethan Ampadu.
The result lifted promoted Sunderland to 40 points — 15 clear of the relegation zone and appearing safe.SO
