Historic Visit: His Holiness Pope Leo XIV to Visit Algeria in April 2026

By Dr. Kivumbi Earnest Bemjamin, L.H.D (Hon)

Algiers — His Holiness Pope Leo XIV is scheduled to undertake a historic first-ever papal visit to Algeria from April 13–15, 2026, marking a significant milestone in Catholic–Muslim relations and interreligious dialogue. The visit will include stops in Algiers and Annaba (formerly Hippo), the home of Saint Augustine of Hippo, underscoring Algeria’s deep Christian heritage and the Pope’s commitment to strengthening ties between faith communities.

The Archbishop of Algiers, Cardinal Jean‑Paul Vesco, described the upcoming visit as a “powerful signal” and a “living testament to coexistence,” positioning Algeria as a launching pad for a global message of peace urgently needed in today’s world.

In an interview with the Algeria Press Service (APS), Cardinal Vesco emphasized that this unprecedented papal visit represents “a true bridge between the Christian and Islamic worlds,” while also reflecting the richness of Algeria’s history and profound cultural depth.

He noted that the visit carries deep spiritual and symbolic significance, highlighting that the presence of one of Christianity’s most prominent spiritual leaders in a Muslim-majority country reinforces Algeria’s historical legacy as the land of Saint Augustine.

Cardinal Vesco further revealed that Pope Leo XIV is already familiar with Algeria, having visited the country twice before his papacy. He explained that this visit continues ongoing efforts to build bridges between Islam and Christianity, while also reflecting Algeria’s strategic position as a crossroads between the Mediterranean region and the African continent.

Emphasizing shared values between Algeria and the Holy See, Cardinal Vesco highlighted their common commitment to supporting vulnerable populations and promoting coexistence and dialogue. The visit’s theme, inspired by the Islamic greeting “As-salāmu alaykum” (Peace be upon you), further reinforces this message.

Describing the Pope as “a man of peace bearing a message the world desperately needs,” Cardinal Vesco expressed his delight that Algeria would serve as the starting point for this global call for peace. He added that this message would emerge from sincere dialogue, positioning Algeria as a beacon of hope for humanity.

According to Cardinal Vesco, the Pope’s call for peace aims to encourage believers of all faiths to unite around shared values, particularly the sanctity of human life, at a time when global conflicts and violence threaten stability worldwide.

Recalling the legacy of former Archbishop of Algiers, Henri Teissier, Cardinal Vesco described Algeria as “a model of coexistence,” noting that religious diversity can serve as a source of integration when properly understood.

He also emphasized that confronting hate speech and extremism requires confidence in one’s identity, stressing that building a world based on mutual respect demands collective effort from all communities.

Historical Memory and Colonial Legacy

Addressing historical memory, Cardinal Vesco also spoke about the lasting impact of French colonial rule in Algeria, which spanned more than 130 years and left deep wounds, including those linked to nuclear testing in southern Algeria.

He highlighted the need for honest historical acknowledgment, expressing hope that recognition of past suffering could help turn the page toward reconciliation. Drawing on his dual French-Algerian background, Cardinal Vesco urged former colonial powers to assume their historical responsibilities.

A Personal Connection to Algeria

In closing, Cardinal Vesco—who has lived in Algeria for over 20 years and holds Algerian citizenship—expressed his deep affection for the country, praising the generosity and warmth of the Algerian people.
