Kenya on Monday flagged off more than 200 troops deployed to the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission (MONUSCO) in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The troops were flagged off by the Vice Chief of Defence Forces (VCDF), Lieutenant General Francis Ogolla, who urged them to uphold and surpass the exemplary performance registered by the previous team.

“Over the years, Kenya has sent troops in various peacekeeping missions and have been commended for their courage and professionalism. As you go there, protect the face of Kenya since you’re not only representing KDF but the entire country,” said Ogolla.

The deployment of the Quick Reaction Force (QRF) comes following a rigorous five-month pre-deployment training that sought to get them ready for the mission ahead.

MONUSCO, deployed in DR Congo since July 2010, is mandated to, among other things, protect civilians, humanitarian personnel and human rights defenders under imminent threat of physical violence and to support the Government of DR Congo in its stabilization and peace consolidation efforts.
