South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has sent condolences to the families of 19 pupils and two adults who were killed in a horrific road accident on Friday.
The crash happened near Pongola in northern KwaZulu-Natal, when a truck that was overtaking another hit the vehicle transporting the school children.
The pupils were between the ages five and 12.
According to reports by local media outlets, the two adults were the nnyo PPS kl bakkie driver and another passenger.
“This is yet another sad moment for our country, following the substantial loss of young lives in an Eastern Cape tavern recently,” President Ramaphosa said.
“We cannot afford to lose such precious lives under any conditions. I hope the investigation into the Pongola incident will shed light on the cause of this tragedy and help us take better care of our children into the future.”
KwaZulu-Natal acting premier Nomagugu Simelane said in a statement authorities will conduct speedy investigations into the crash.
