Authorities in Ghana have arrested over 100 individuals, predominantly supporters of President-elect John Mahama, following a wave of post-election violence and lawlessness. The unrest erupted in the wake of Saturday’s elections, with tensions rising over delays in the announcement of the results and disputes regarding some parliamentary outcomes.

The arrested individuals are accused of various acts of vandalism, including attacks on state institutions, looting of properties, and disturbances that resulted in injuries to police and military personnel. Additionally, two electoral commission offices were set ablaze by irate supporters frustrated with the delay in releasing election results.
President-elect John Mahama, while addressing the situation, strongly condemned the acts of violence and vandalism. He urged President Nana Akufo-Addo and the country’s security agencies to take swift and decisive action to restore order and address the escalating violence.
The unrest highlights the challenges facing Ghana in maintaining its reputation as one of Africa’s most stable democracies. Observers are now calling for calm and the peaceful resolution of electoral disputes to ensure the country’s democratic integrity remains intact.
