Four Senior UPDF Officers Elevated to the Rank of Major General.

In a significant development within the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF), four senior officers have been elevated to the rank of acting Major General and appointed as division commanders. This move aligns with the UPDF’s ongoing efforts to professionalize the force under its new establishment.

The officers promoted include Brigadier Generals Stephen Mugerwa, Felix Busizoori, Paul Muhanguzi, and Keith Katungi. Their promotions and appointments were announced by the Chief of Defence Forces, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, on Wednesday.

New Roles for Promoted Officers

Maj Gen Stephen Mugerwa: Formerly the Deputy Commander of the 1st Infantry Division in Mbarara, he has been promoted to acting Major General and appointed as the Commander of the 1st Division based in Kakiri, Wakiso District.

Maj Gen Paul Muhanguzi: Previously serving as the Commander of the 2nd Division in Mbarara, he has also been elevated to acting Major General, retaining his position as the 2nd Division Commander.

Maj Gen Felix Busizoori: Formerly the Commander of the 4th Infantry Division in Gulu, he has been promoted to acting Major General and will continue leading the 4th Division.

Maj Gen Keith Katungi: The Commander of the Infantry Division in the Lango Sub-region has been promoted to acting Major General, maintaining his leadership role in the division.

New UPDF Establishment

The promotions are in line with the revised UPDF structure, which allows the Chief of Defence Forces to appoint officers to acting positions and ranks pending confirmation by the Commander-in-Chief. This initiative aims to enhance operational efficiency and professionalism within the force.

According to UPDF Spokesperson Brig Gen Felix Kulayigye, the changes reflect the army’s commitment to ensuring capable leadership at all levels.

The elevation of these officers marks a milestone in the continued transformation and modernization of the UPDF, as the force strives to adapt to evolving security demands.
