A US man, Travis Timmerman, has been found near Damascus after being detained in a Syrian prison for seven months. Timmerman, who entered Syria on foot, described his dramatic release, crediting two hammer-wielding men for breaking open his prison door during a rebel uprising that toppled the regime of Bashar al-Assad.

Residents near the Syrian capital discovered Timmerman on Monday, lying on a sofa and speaking to local reporters. He recounted being arrested shortly after crossing into Syria earlier this year. His disappearance was first reported in May, after he was last seen in Budapest, Hungary, according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol and Hungarian authorities.

The timing of his release coincides with a significant shift in Syria’s political landscape. Rebel forces, led by Ahmed al-Sharaa, also known as Abu Mohammed al-Jolani, have declared their intention to close Assad’s infamous prisons and seek justice for victims of torture and killings under the regime. “We will pursue them in Syria, and we ask countries to hand over those who fled so we can achieve justice,” said al-Jolani.

The fall of Damascus marks a turning point in Syria’s civil war. Rebels have taken control of the capital and dismantled symbols of Assad’s government, including its notoriously harsh prison system. Timmerman’s rescue highlights the chaotic and unpredictable nature of the country’s ongoing conflict, as well as the human cost of years of unrest.
