A shocking video has emerged showing four police officers dragging an elderly woman in the mud during an arrest in Mbarara City, Uganda. The incident, which took place on Thursday, December 12, 2024, has sparked widespread condemnation from the public and officials alike.

The woman, a resident of Lubiri Cell in Mbarara City, was being arrested on charges of trespass when the officers, identified as ASP Andrew Betunga, Detective Constable Darious Aharizira, Detective Constable Hope Nsasirwe, and Detective Constable Loyce Kiboneka, resorted to using excessive force.

The video shows the woman being roughly handled and dragged through muddy terrain, prompting outrage on social media and calls for justice.

Police Condemn Actions of Officers

In response to the incident, the Uganda Police Force issued a statement condemning the method of arrest, describing it as unprofessional and contrary to their standards. “The officers involved have been arrested and are currently detained at Mbarara Central Police Station,” the statement read. The police also assured the public that disciplinary action against the officers is underway and that further updates will be provided.

Minister Calls for Severe Consequences

The Minister of State for Youth and Children Affairs, Mr. Balaam Barugahara Ateenyi, joined in condemning the actions, calling the arrest “outrageous and horrific.” He emphasized that the officers involved “deserve severe consequences” for their conduct, which he said tarnishes the image of law enforcement.

The elderly woman’s condition following the incident remains unclear, but the footage has amplified concerns about police brutality and the treatment of vulnerable individuals during arrests.

This incident has reignited discussions on the need for police reforms and stricter oversight to ensure professionalism and accountability within the force.
