At cruising altitude, with passengers asleep and the hum of jet engines filling the cabin, few expect a medical emergency to unfold. But on Friday aboard Turkish Airlines Flight TK585 from Istanbul to Mauritania, fate intervened — and so did an Ugandan doctor.

Dr. Jibril Semakula Owomugisha in green responded to an in-flight medical emergency aboard Turkish Airlines Flight TK585, stabilising a critically ill passenger and restoring calm among crew and travellers.
When the cabin crew’s voice echoed through the aircraft asking, “Is there any medical doctor on board?”, Dr. Jibril Semakula Owomugisha was asleep in his seat. Within seconds, he was on his feet.
“I didn’t raise my hand,” Dr. Semakula recalls. “I went straight to the crew.”
That instinctive response would soon make the difference between life and death.

A Critical Situation in the Sky
Escorted by a flight attendant, Dr. Semakula was led to a passenger seated in business class. The patient was in critical condition, prompting immediate concern. In adherence to medical ethics, details of the illness remain undisclosed.
Working within the constraints of an aircraft cabin, Dr. Semakula requested access to the patient’s hand luggage. Inside, he found medical documents that revealed the passenger’s medical history — a crucial breakthrough in guiding treatment.
With time running out, he asked for the onboard first aid kit and coordinated closely with the flight crew and captain. The cockpit responded swiftly, ensuring all available medical resources were placed at his disposal.

Thirty Minutes That Changed Everything
The patient was placed on a cannula and monitored continuously for about 30 minutes. Passengers watched anxiously as the doctor worked methodically, balancing urgency with precision.
Then, the turning point came.
“The patient stabilised,” Dr. Semakula says simply. “His life was restored.”
Relief swept through the cabin. The tension that had gripped both passengers and crew gradually eased as it became clear the emergency had been contained.
Recognition at Touchdown
Upon landing, Dr. Semakula completed the required medical documentation detailing the incident. The flight crew later engaged him further, commending his professionalism and calm leadership under pressure.

In an announcement that drew applause from passengers, Turkish Airlines revealed plans to financially reward and formally honour the Ugandan doctor for his life-saving intervention.
For Dr. Semakula, however, the recognition is secondary.
“Saving a life is the greatest reward for any doctor,” he says. “Everything else comes after.”
Lessons Beyond the Flight
The mid-air emergency, Dr. Semakula believes, carries critical lessons for the travelling public — particularly those living with chronic illnesses.
He stresses the importance of proper preparation before long journeys, including:

Carrying medical records and prescriptions in hand luggage Strict adherence to medication schedules Consulting a doctor before long-distance travel Staying hydrated and avoiding triggers such as alcohol and fatigue
He also notes that conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, asthma, hypertension, and epilepsy can deteriorate rapidly if preventive measures are ignored.
Preparedness Saves Lives
The incident also highlights the importance of well-equipped first aid kits and trained airline crews capable of supporting medical professionals during emergencies.
“In emergencies, teamwork matters,” Dr. Semakula says. “The crew and captain were fully supportive. That collaboration saved a life.”

A Quiet Hero
As news of the incident spreads, Dr. Jibril Semakula Owomugisha is being hailed as a quiet hero — a reminder that professionalism, compassion, and preparedness can make a life-saving difference even at 35,000 feet above the ground.

For Uganda’s medical community, and for passengers who witnessed the moment, his actions stand as a powerful testament to the oath doctors take — to serve, wherever duty calls.

I’ve known Dr Jibril from peer level to professionalism, he is one unmatched and calm at all situations. He has even much more untapped and unlocked capacities and energies. Authorities and societies should even give him a much more platform to serve. They won’t regret
