Highlights of a Historic Visit
Pope Leo XIV has concluded his three-day official visit to Algeria, marking a historic first in relations between the Algerian State and the Holy See. Widely regarded as a success, the visit carried significant political, religious, and geopolitical weight. Reflecting on the journey, the pontiff described it as “a blessed visit.”

The Pope was seen off at Houari Boumediene International Airport in a solemn farewell ceremony presided over by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune. Prior to departure, the two leaders held a private meeting in the presidential lounge, followed by national anthems and a review of official delegations. A ceremonial parade by the People’s National Army underscored the historic and diplomatic significance of the occasion.
The Algeria stop marks the opening leg of the Pope’s broader African tour focused on peace, dialogue, and interfaith cooperation. He departed for Yaoundé, with subsequent visits planned to Cameroon, Angola, and Equatorial Guinea.
Symbolic Moments in Algiers

Reflection at Maqam Echahid
One of the most poignant moments came at the Martyrs’ Memorial in Algiers, where the Pope laid a wreath in honor of those who died during the Algerian War of Independence. In a solemn atmosphere, he observed a moment of silence, paying tribute to the country’s history and sacrifice.
Speaking at the nearby Riadh El-Feth, the Pope described Algeria as “a crossroads of cultures and religions,” emphasizing its role in fostering stability and dialogue across the Mediterranean.
Interfaith Dialogue at Great Mosque of Algiers
At the Great Mosque, the Pope praised the resilience and values of the Algerian people, highlighting solidarity, tolerance, and community spirit. He emphasized that these values are essential for building a culture of peace and reconciliation.
President Abdelmadjid Tebboune reaffirmed Algeria’s commitment to strengthening cooperation with the Vatican, stressing dialogue over division and coexistence over conflict.
Emotional استقبال at Basilica of Our Lady of Africa
At the Basilica of Our Lady of Africa, the Pope received a warm and emotional استقبال from crowds. The moment, marked by traditional ululations and quiet reflection, symbolized unity across faiths and cultures. The Pope responded with a gesture of gratitude, placing his hand over his heart.

Spiritual Significance in Annaba
In Annaba, the birthplace of Saint Augustine, the Pope described his visit as “a gift of divine providence.” He called for the preservation of Augustine’s legacy—rooted in truth, tolerance, and forgiveness—as a guiding force in addressing modern global challenges.
At the Basilica of Saint Augustine, where he presided over Mass, the Pope expressed gratitude to Algerian authorities and called for global commitment to justice and peace. The gathering, attended by both Christian and Muslim faithful, reflected the spirit of interreligious harmony that defined the visit.
A Message of Peace and Human Dignity
Throughout his stay, the Pope addressed global challenges, condemning war, inequality, and injustice. He urged leaders and societies to prioritize fraternity, dialogue, and solidarity as the foundations of lasting peace.
He also visited a retirement home, meeting residents and caregivers in a gesture that reinforced his message of compassion and human dignity.
A Visit Beyond Diplomacy
The farewell between President Abdelmadjid Tebboune and Pope Leo XIV marked the conclusion of a visit of profound diplomatic and spiritual importance. Beyond official ceremonies, the trip underscored a shared commitment to interfaith dialogue and mutual understanding.
As the Pope continues his African journey, Algeria emerges from this historic moment as a symbol of dialogue—where memory, faith, and the future converge in pursuit of peace.
