Allyson Felix, the most decorated female track and field athlete of all time, is planning a sensational return from retirement with the aim of competing at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games.

In an interview with TIME magazine published on Monday, Felix said she is considering a comeback bid for the Games, which will be held in her home country.
“So many of us have been told not to do the big, bold thing,” she said, reflecting on her decision and the possibility of returning to elite competition.

Allyson Felix has said she is considering a bold comeback bid for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games, reflecting on the possibility of returning to competition despite retirement.

“You know, at this age, I should probably be staying home and taking care of my kids, doing all that. And just, why not? Let’s flip it on its head. Let’s go after the thing. Let’s be vulnerable,” the 40-year-old said in an interview with TIME magazine.

The Los Angeles native, a seven-time Olympic gold medallist, would be competing at her sixth Olympic Games if she qualifies for LA28. Felix retired after the Tokyo Olympics in 2021 with 11 Olympic medals, cementing her status as one of the most decorated athletes in track and field history.

She has previously said one of her biggest career regrets was never having the opportunity to compete at a home Olympics. Speaking about the prospect, she noted the unique atmosphere of the Games for host-country athletes.

“When I was competing, you just heard this roar for host-country athletes at the Olympics,” she said. “I would love to experience that.”

Felix, who is a member of the LA28 Organizing Committee Athletes’ Commission, added that she would regret not attempting a return.

“I would probably be upset at myself if I just didn’t give it a try,” she said. “However it turns out, I’ll still be there with my kids, hanging out and cheering everybody on.”

A mother of two, Felix has long been a prominent advocate for women in sport and athlete mothers. She previously split with longtime sponsor Nike following a contract dispute after the birth of her first child and later co-founded Saysh, a women’s footwear and apparel company.

She told TIME magazine that she has been inspired by athletes who have extended their careers into their 40s, including Tom Brady, LeBron James and Lindsey Vonn.

Felix’s potential return to the Olympic stage remains uncertain, however, as she would first need to navigate the highly competitive United States track and field qualification system to secure a place at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games.
