Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani Critically Ill in Hospital

Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani is in hospital in “stable but critical condition,” according to his spokesman.

“Mayor Giuliani is a fighter who has faced every challenge in his life with unwavering strength, and he is fighting with that same level of strength as we speak,” Ted Goodman said in a post on social media.

Shortly afterwards, President Donald Trump described Giuliani as “the Best Mayor in the History of New York City, BY FAR” on Truth Social, and praised his efforts to contest the 2020 presidential election, which was won by Democrat Joe Biden.

No further details about Giuliani’s illness have been released. The 81-year-old was injured in a car accident late last year.

Goodman concluded his post by saying: “We do ask that you join us in prayer for America’s Mayor Rudy Giuliani.”

Giuliani earned the nickname “America’s Mayor” after leading New York City through the aftermath of the September 11, 2001 attacks.

In recognition of his leadership, Giuliani was awarded an honorary knighthood (KBE) by Queen Elizabeth II in 2002.
He left office in 2004 and, four years later, made an unsuccessful bid for the Republican presidential nomination.

Giuliani went on to become a key supporter of fellow New Yorker Donald Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign, most prominently appearing at the Republican National Convention. He later served as Trump’s personal lawyer.

Following the 2020 US presidential election, Giuliani and other Trump advisers travelled across the country making false claims about the result, alleging that Trump’s opponent, Joe Biden, had attempted to steal the election.

In a later legal case, a jury ordered Giuliani to pay $148 million (£108 million) in damages to two election workers he had falsely accused of ballot fraud, in a defamation ruling.

In a social media post expressing concern for Giuliani’s health, Trump repeated his false claims that Democrats stole the 2020 election.

“They cheated on the Elections, fabricated hundreds of stories, did anything possible to destroy our Nation, and now, look at Rudy. So sad!” he said.

Last September, Giuliani was a passenger in a Ford Bronco that was struck from behind in the US state of New Hampshire.
At the time, his security guard said he suffered a fractured thoracic vertebrae, multiple lacerations and contusions, as well as injuries to his left arm and lower leg.
