KAMPALA, Uganda – June 28, 2026: Uganda’s leading independent media house, Nation Media Group (NMG) Uganda, has said its premises are under “military siege” after security forces surrounded its offices following an order by Chief of Defence Forces Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba to shut down some of its media platforms.  

According to reports, armed security personnel were deployed at the Daily Monitor headquarters in Namuwongo, Kampala, preventing staff from entering or leaving the premises. Television broadcasts of NTV Uganda and Spark TV reportedly went off air, while radio stations KFM and Dembe FM were also affected during the operation.  

The shutdown followed a series of social media posts by Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, in which he announced that Daily Monitor and NTV Uganda would be closed and later stated that they would not resume operations without his permission. In another post, he said he did not believe in a free press and argued that the media should be guided by “cadres of the revolution.”  

Neither the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF), the Uganda Police Force, nor the Uganda Communications Commission had immediately issued a formal legal explanation for the operation at the time of reporting. The management of Nation Media Group Uganda had also not released an official statement on the status of its operations.  

The incident has drawn concern from media freedom advocates and international observers, who say the move raises fresh questions about press freedom and the operating environment for independent journalism in Uganda.
