Ill Health Forces Adjournment of Lukwago Treason Case to July 7

Former Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago on Monday failed to appear before the Chief Magistrate’s Court after being admitted to Mulago National Referral Hospital, where he is currently receiving medical treatment.

Lukwago, who faces charges of misprision of treason, was expected to appear before Chief Magistrate Sarah Basemera for a progress update on ongoing police investigations. However, the hearing was instead handled in chambers after the court received communication explaining his absence.

The Uganda Prisons Service informed the court that Lukwago remains hospitalized at Mulago, where he is undergoing further medical examinations and treatment.

Court records further indicated that his lawyer, Medard Lubega Sseggona, together with his wife, recently visited him in hospital and confirmed that he was still unwell and under medical care.

Doctors have reportedly advised continued medication for former Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago, prompting prison authorities to formally notify the court that he is currently unfit to attend proceedings.

Speaking to journalists after the session, Lukwago’s lawyer Medard Lubega Sseggona confirmed that his client remains too weak to appear before court. Chief Magistrate Sarah Basemera subsequently adjourned the case to July 7, 2026, to allow police investigations to continue.

Lukwago was transferred from Luzira Murchison Bay Prison to Mulago National Referral Hospital on June 25, 2026, following an order by the Makindye Chief Magistrate’s Court directing prison authorities to provide specialised medical care after concerns were raised over his deteriorating health while on remand.

Last week, Chief Magistrate Basemera denied Lukwago bail but ordered that he undergo a comprehensive medical examination and receive treatment at Mulago Hospital.

The court also directed that his wife and one lawyer of his choice be granted reasonable access during his treatment, and that they be provided with copies of medical reports prepared by attending specialists.

Lukwago has previously stated that he suffers from hypertension, gastritis, respiratory complications, and a spinal condition. He remains on remand on charges of misprision of treason.

Prosecutors allege that between 2021 and November 2024, Lukwago knew of an alleged plot by his clients, Dr Kizza Besigye and Obeid Lutale Kamulegeya, to overthrow the government but deliberately failed to report the alleged plot to authorities, contrary to the law.
