Portugal vs Spain: Ronaldo, Yamal Set for World Cup Last-16 Showdown

Updated by Faith Barbara N Ruhinda at 1114 EAT on Monday 6 July 2026

A fascinating clash of generations awaits on Monday as veteran forward Cristiano Ronaldo leads Portugal against teenage sensation Lamine Yamal and Spain in a FIFA World Cup Round of 16 showdown.

The Iberian derby is a rematch of last year’s UEFA Nations League final, in which Portugal defeated European champions Spain in a penalty shootout to lift the trophy.

Despite that triumph, Portugal head into the encounter in Dallas as underdogs. After an inconsistent group-stage campaign and a hard-fought passage into the knockout rounds, Roberto Martínez’s side face a formidable challenge against a Spain team widely regarded as one of the tournament favourites.

Spain have steadily gathered momentum since being held to a surprise goalless draw in their opening match. Their fluid attacking football, creative midfield and disciplined defence have established them among the leading contenders to reach the World Cup quarterfinals for the first time in 16 years.

Road to the Round of 16

Portugal finished second in Group K on five points after defeating Uzbekistan and drawing with DR Congo and Colombia. They then came from behind to edge Croatia 2-1 in the Round of 32, securing their place in the last 16 after a hard-fought victory.

Spain advanced from Group H before producing one of the standout performances of the Round of 32, cruising to a convincing 3-0 victory over Austria to set up a mouthwatering Iberian derby against Portugal.

Spain topped Group H with seven points, recording victories over Saudi Arabia and Uruguay before being held to a goalless draw by Cape Verde. They carried that momentum into the knockout stage, cruising to a 3-0 victory over Austria in the Round of 32.

La Roja arrive in the last 16 unbeaten in their previous 34 matches, with 25 wins and nine draws, leaving them just one game short of equalling the national team’s longest unbeaten run of 35 matches set between February 2007 and June 2009.

Ronaldo’s Final World Cup Campaign?

At 41, Cristiano Ronaldo remains the face of Portuguese football and one of the most recognisable figures in the sport. While his influence on the pitch may no longer match the heights of his prime years, his leadership, experience and presence continue to play a pivotal role for Portugal.

The tournament has reignited speculation about Ronaldo’s future, with the 2026 World Cup widely viewed as the likely final chapter of his international career. Although the veteran forward has declined to discuss his plans beyond the tournament, reports suggesting that retirement from international football could be imminent have added further significance to Portugal’s knockout campaign.

As a result, every match carries added weight for Ronaldo and his teammates. Defeat against Spain would not only end Portugal’s World Cup journey but could also mark the conclusion of one of the most celebrated international careers in football history.

Ronaldo has won numerous titles and individual honours at both club and international level, cementing his place among the game’s all-time greats. However, the FIFA World Cup remains the one major trophy missing from an otherwise glittering collection. A loss to Spain would leave that elusive prize beyond his reach once again.

Lamine Yamal’s debut World Cup campaign briefly came under threat after a hamstring injury, but the 18-year-old winger has since recovered and is increasingly becoming one of Spain’s most influential players in North America.

His man-of-the-match performance in Spain’s Round of 32 victory over Austria highlighted his growing importance, two years after he first announced himself on the international stage during Spain’s Euro 2024 triumph.

“I want to advance through the rounds and win with Spain,” Yamal said. “We aren’t afraid of any team. We are Spain.”

“The World Cup starts now.”

So far, Yamal has scored once in the tournament, while Mikel Oyarzabal leads Spain’s scoring charts with four goals. Spain remain unbeaten in 34 matches and are chasing a second World Cup title, 16 years after their 2010 triumph in South Africa.

Portugal vs Spain – prediction

The Opta supercomputer gives Spain a 49.2% chance of winning in normal time, compared to Portugal’s 25.6%. There is a 25.2% probability that the match will go into extra time.

There has been little to separate Portugal and Spain across their five previous meetings at major tournaments, with each side recording one victory and the other three encounters ending in draws.

One of the most memorable clashes came at the 2018 World Cup, when the sides played out a thrilling 3-3 draw, a match in which Cristiano Ronaldo scored a hat-trick.

In the all-time head-to-head record, the two Iberian rivals have met 41 times, with Spain winning 18 matches, Portugal winning seven, and 16 ending in draws.

Portugal will, however, draw confidence from their most recent competitive meeting, when they defeated Spain on penalties in the UEFA Nations League final in June 2025 after a tightly contested encounter.
