US Carries Out ‘Heavy’ Strikes on Iran Following Attempted Attack on American Forces

US Central Command (Centcom) said it had struck “dozens” of Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) targets after Iran launched attacks on US bases in Jordan and against vessels in the Strait of Hormuz.

Iranian state media reported that three people, including a two-year-old child, were killed in the strikes on Qeshm Island, with additional targets hit in parts of southern and western Iran.

The latest attacks mark a further escalation in the conflict, coming during a week that has seen fighting spread beyond Iran and Israel, including the first publicly acknowledged joint US-Saudi strikes against Iranian-backed groups in Iraq.

The conflict has continued for five months despite President Donald Trump’s earlier prediction that the US and Israeli military campaign against Iran, launched in February, would last only a few weeks.

Meanwhile, Axios reported on Wednesday, citing an unnamed US official, that Saudi Defence Minister Prince Khalid bin Salman met Trump and conveyed Riyadh’s interest in reducing tensions. The BBC said it had approached the White House for a response.

Meanwhile, the Egyptian government said a fire that broke out at a port on Wednesday was caused by a drone attack. Egypt, a US ally, has not previously been directly targeted during the conflict.

The US-Iran conflict has intensified after several days of relative calm, during which both sides paused attacks as diplomatic efforts appeared to resume in search of a possible solution.

US President Donald Trump described the talks as “very friendly negotiations”, although Tehran denied that any discussions were taking place.

However, following Iran’s missile attack on a US base in Jordan on Tuesday, Trump vowed retaliation, telling reporters at the White House: “We’re going to be hitting them very hard because it’s our turn to hit them. They know it’s coming. They asked us not to do it.”

The US strikes targeted “military command centres, missile and drone facilities, coastal surveillance and defence sites, and maritime capabilities,” US Central Command (Centcom) said after the operation was completed.

Iranian state media outlet IRIB reported that Qeshm and Abadan islands, both key locations for the country’s oil industry, were among the areas hit.

Iran’s Fars news agency, citing the Hormozgan University of Medical Sciences, reported that a US strike on a residential home in the Chah Tangu neighbourhood of Qeshm killed three members of a family — a father, mother and their two-year-old child.

Meanwhile, Jordan’s armed forces said its air defence systems intercepted five Iranian missiles targeting the country’s territory on Thursday.

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said on Tuesday that it had targeted a US air base and a command centre in Jordan “in response to the acts of aggression of the American child-killing army.”
