KAMPALA — Road safety consultant Deo Kahigiwa Byaruhanga has called on churches and religious leaders to take a more active role in preventing road crashes and promoting responsible behaviour among road users.

Kahigiwa, a Master Trainer under the East African Community (EAC) Curriculum and Road Safety Consultant, said protecting lives on the road should be treated as a ministry responsibility and not only as a matter of enforcing traffic laws.

In his presentation, Kahigiwa said road crashes kill about 3,200 people globally every day, with more than 12 people reportedly dying daily in Uganda.

He urged churches to use their influence to promote road safety, saying responsible driving should be viewed as part of loving and protecting other people.

Kahigiwa based his message on biblical teachings, including stewardship, love, respect for authority, prevention of danger and protection of life.

He introduced the L.I.F.E. approach to road safety, urging motorists to Limit Speed, avoid Intoxication and Distraction, practise Fit Protection by using helmets, seat belts and child seats, and Ensure Integrity by ensuring vehicles are roadworthy and not overloaded.

He also urged churches to ensure their vehicles are operated by rested and licensed drivers.

Kahigiwa called on pastors, bishops and other religious leaders to make three commitments towards improving road safety.

The first is to preach road safety, including dedicating at least one Sunday every year to road safety awareness.

The second is to model safe behaviour by committing to avoid drinking and driving, always wearing seat belts or helmets, and avoiding phone use while driving.

The third is to minister to road crash victims by visiting and comforting victims and advocating for safer roads around churches.

Kahigiwa said road crashes should not only be viewed as police matters but also as issues that require pastoral attention.

He urged religious leaders to use their platforms to encourage communities to adopt safer road practices and help reduce deaths and injuries caused by road crashes.
