Uganda’s President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has reaffirmed his strong relations and position with Russia amidst Ukraine war. while meeting President Vladimir Putin’s strong man Sergey Lavrov, Russia’s Foreign Minister on Tuesday evening at State House Entebbe.
Political analysts have interpreted Museveni’s move as defying the West when it lobbied African nations to support Ukraine against Russia.
Shortly after the meeting, Museveni wrote on his on his twitter;
“We want to trade with Russia. We want to trade with all countries of the world. We don’t believe in being enemies of somebody’s enemy, No! We want to make our own enemies not fight other people’s enemies.”
The people of Uganda and myself welcome H.E Sergey Lavrov, Russia’s Foreign Minister. Russia has been supporting the anti-colonial African movement for the last 100 years and I commend their long-standing relationship with Uganda.
How can we automatically be against those who have been with us for the last 100 years? We have forgiven those who did bad things to us and we are working with them, how about those who have never harmed us?
