South Africa is mourning the death of veteran actress and former beauty queen Cynthia Shange, who has passed away at the age of 76.

Her family confirmed that Shange died on April 20, 2026, bringing to an end a remarkable life that spanned decades of influence in both the entertainment and cultural sectors of South Africa.

Shange first rose to prominence in 1972 when she made history as the first Black South African woman to represent the country at the Miss World pageant. Her participation came during the apartheid era, a time when racial segregation defined nearly every aspect of public life.

Her appearance on the international stage was widely regarded as a breakthrough moment, symbolising quiet resistance and the slow opening of doors for Black South Africans in global spaces.

After her success in pageantry, Shange transitioned into acting, where she built a respected career in television and theatre. She became a familiar face to many viewers through her performances in several productions, most notably the long-running South African drama series Muvhango. Her presence on screen was often praised for its authenticity, grace, and emotional depth.

Over the years, she earned admiration not only as an actress but also as a cultural figure who helped shape the early visibility of Black women in South African media at a time when opportunities were limited.

News of her passing has triggered an outpouring of tributes from across the entertainment industry, with colleagues, fans, and public figures describing her as a pioneer, a role model, and a woman who helped open doors for future generations of performers.

While her family has not publicly shared details surrounding the cause of death, they have asked for privacy as they mourn their loss.
