Yoweri Museveni was sworn in on 12 May 2026 for a seventh term as President of Uganda, extending his more than four decades in power since first taking office in 1986.
The inauguration ceremony took place at Kololo Ceremonial Grounds in Kampala, drawing regional leaders, diplomats, senior government officials and invited guests. The event featured a military parade, cultural performances and heightened security across the capital.
The swearing-in follows Museveni’s victory in the January 2026 general election, securing another five-year mandate in a political landscape that remains closely contested.

Museveni now places among Africa’s longest-serving leaders, firmly within a shrinking group often described as the continent’s “octogenarian club.” But analysts say his age tells only part of the story.
A more striking figure is the roughly 65-year gap between the president and Uganda’s median age, estimated at about 16.7 years. Uganda remains one of the youngest countries in the world.
As a result, most Ugandans have lived their entire lives under Museveni’s rule. For millions born after the 1990s, he is not just a historical figure or liberation leader, but a constant presence in national life—the country’s only commander-in-chief and dominant political authority they have ever known.
In his address, Museveni called for continued stability, unity and economic transformation, urging Ugandans to focus on development priorities as the country enters a new political cycle.

He highlighted ongoing government programmes in infrastructure, agriculture and industrialisation, while reaffirming commitments to regional integration and peace in East Africa.
Observers say the inauguration goes beyond ceremony, reflecting deeper questions about political longevity, generational change and the evolving meaning of power in a rapidly young and fast-changing society.
Despite these debates, the government maintains that its focus remains on stability, security and economic growth.
