England head into the 2026 FIFA World Cup determined to end a 60-year wait for a second world title. The Three Lions, whose only World Cup triumph came on home soil in 1966, are once again among the favourites after a series of strong performances at major tournaments in recent years.
Led by captain Harry Kane, England possess a blend of experienced stars and exciting young talent. However, questions remain over whether they can finally translate their potential into silverware as expectations continue to rise.

Drawn in a group with Croatia, Ghana and Panama, England will be expected to advance to the knockout stages and mount a serious challenge for football’s biggest prize.
England cruised through their qualifying campaign, becoming the first European nation to secure a place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup with two matches to spare.
However, the achievement came against relatively modest opposition, leaving some questions about the team’s true credentials heading into the tournament.
Recent performances have done little to ease those concerns. Disappointing friendly defeats to Senegal and Japan were met with frustration from Wembley supporters, who voiced their dissatisfaction with a side that has struggled to consistently deliver exciting football.
As England prepare for another shot at World Cup glory, key questions remain. Can stars such as Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane inspire the team when it matters most? Will the Three Lions rediscover the attacking flair that many fans feel has been lacking? And has head coach Thomas Tuchel settled on his strongest starting XI?
Tuchel Prioritises Team Chemistry
Tuchel’s squad selection has sparked debate after several high-profile omissions and a handful of surprise inclusions.
Among those left out were Chelsea playmaker Cole Palmer and Manchester City midfielder Phil Foden, both regarded as among England’s most creative talents but coming off underwhelming seasons. Real Madrid full-back Trent Alexander-Arnold and Manchester United defender Harry Maguire were also overlooked.

In contrast, striker Ivan Toney earned a call-up despite limited involvement under Tuchel since moving to Saudi Pro League side Al-Ahli. Other selections that have attracted scrutiny include Tottenham Hotspur defender Djed Spence, veteran midfielder Jordan Henderson, 35, and Bayer Leverkusen defender Jarell Quansah.
The German coach appears to have prioritised squad harmony and tactical balance over reputation, a gamble that could either strengthen England’s title bid or leave them short of quality in crucial moments.
Defending his selection policy, Tuchel said the focus has always been on building a cohesive unit rather than simply assembling the most talented individuals.
“From day one, we were clear that we are trying to select and build the best possible team, which is not necessarily to select and collect the 26 most talented players,” Tuchel told reporters.
The German coach stressed that team spirit and chemistry would be crucial to England’s hopes of ending their long wait for World Cup glory.
“Teams win championships. It’s as simple as that. Everything I know and hear about international football is that it is about the team and the chemistry,” he added.
Tuchel’s comments come amid growing debate over several high-profile omissions from his World Cup squad, with the England manager insisting that collective strength will ultimately outweigh individual talent at the tournament.
