KAMPALA, June 5, 2026 — The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) has announced a nationwide recruitment exercise targeting 10,200 new soldiers, with military authorities placing special emphasis on science and technical qualifications while introducing stricter measures to curb corruption during the enlistment process.

The recruitment drive, scheduled to commence later this month, forms part of efforts to strengthen the country’s defence capabilities and equip the military with skills required for modern security operations.

According to the Ministry of Defence and Veteran Affairs, the exercise will be conducted across all districts and cities, targeting eligible Ugandans who possess Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) and Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE) qualifications.

Focus on Science and Technical Skills
In a notable shift from previous recruitment exercises, the UPDF has indicated that applicants with science backgrounds and technical expertise will receive priority consideration.

Military planners say the move is aimed at building a more technologically capable force as the army increasingly relies on advanced communications systems, intelligence gathering, engineering, aviation support, cyber security and modern logistics.

Security experts note that contemporary military operations require personnel with specialized technical knowledge in addition to traditional combat skills.

“The modern military environment demands a workforce capable of operating sophisticated technologies and adapting to evolving security threats,” a senior security official familiar with the recruitment plans said.

The UPDF has in recent years expanded investments in surveillance systems, air capabilities, intelligence infrastructure and specialized military training, creating demand for technically skilled personnel.
Recruitment Timeline
According to the recruitment roadmap, online applications will run from June 10 to June 24, 2026.

Lists of shortlisted candidates are expected to be displayed at district headquarters, city authorities and official UPDF communication platforms between July 1 and July 14.

Physical interviews, document verification and fitness assessments are scheduled to begin on July 20 at designated recruitment centres across the country.

District security committees, Resident District Commissioners (RDCs), Chief Administrative Officers and local leaders have been tasked with overseeing the process to ensure transparency and compliance with established guidelines.
Authorities say district recruitment quotas have also been allocated to promote balanced national representation.

Anti-Corruption Measures Strengthened
The UPDF has issued a strong warning against bribery and recruitment fraud, following persistent complaints during previous enlistment exercises.

Past recruitment drives have been marred by allegations that applicants were asked to pay money to brokers, imposters and individuals falsely claiming influence within military structures.

In some cases, families reportedly incurred significant financial losses after paying fraudsters who promised to secure recruitment opportunities.

To address the problem, military authorities say additional verification mechanisms and monitoring systems have been introduced to safeguard the integrity of the exercise.

The Office of the President has directed district authorities to closely supervise the process and ensure that recruitment is conducted fairly and transparently.

Officials emphasized that the exercise is entirely free of charge and urged applicants not to make payments to any individual offering recruitment assistance.

Members of the public have also been encouraged to report cases of bribery, extortion, favoritism or forgery to security agencies.

Strong Interest Anticipated

The recruitment exercise is expected to attract thousands of applicants, particularly amid rising youth unemployment and recent improvements in military welfare.

Government salary enhancements announced earlier this year significantly increased earnings for junior officers and enlisted personnel as part of broader efforts to improve conditions of service within the armed forces.

Officials say the revised pay structure is intended to boost morale, strengthen professionalism and reduce vulnerability to corruption.

Special Arrangements for Kampala
The Kampala Metropolitan Area will operate under a separate recruitment framework due to its large population and expected volume of applicants.

Areas including Kira, Nansana, Makindye-Ssabagabo, Busiro North and Busiro South will function as independent recruitment units to facilitate efficient management of the exercise.

Authorities say additional logistical preparations are underway to accommodate the anticipated turnout.

Regional Security Considerations
The recruitment comes as Uganda continues to participate in regional peacekeeping and counter-terrorism operations amid persistent instability in parts of East and Central Africa.

The UPDF remains actively engaged in security missions in Somalia and eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, among other regional deployments.

Analysts say the recruitment drive reflects the military’s long-term strategy to maintain operational readiness and strengthen its capacity to respond to evolving security challenges both at home and across the region.

Military authorities have urged eligible youth to apply through official channels and remain vigilant against fraudsters seeking to exploit the recruitment process.
