Senior Citizen and Anglican leader Bishop Hannington Mutebi (born in 1968) is one of Uganda’s respected church leaders, currently serving as the Assistant Bishop of Kampala Diocese, a position he has held since 2014. Over the years, he has distinguished himself through dedicated pastoral leadership, theological scholarship, and service to both the Church and the education sector.

In recognition of his leadership and commitment to higher education, Bishop Mutebi was appointed Chancellor of Ndejje University on December 17, 2021, during the institution’s 23rd Graduation Ceremony.
Early Life and Education
Born in 1968, Hannington Mutebi was baptized into the Anglican faith at an early age. He pursued part of his education in West Germany between 1983 and 1984, an experience that broadened his worldview and contributed to his future leadership development.
Ecclesiastical Journey
Bishop Mutebi’s ministry began in 1989 when he was ordained as a deacon and posted to St. Luke Church, Kibuye. Between 1989 and 1991, he served at Bunamwaya Church of Uganda, where he gained valuable pastoral experience.
From 1992 to 1995, he ministered as Vicar of St. Paul’s Cathedral, Namirembe, one of the most historic Anglican congregations in Uganda. His dedication and leadership saw him take on increasingly significant responsibilities within the Church.

In 2005, he was appointed Vicar of St. Stephen’s Church, Kisugu, and three years later, in 2008, he became Archdeacon of South Archdeaconry in Kampala Diocese. During the same year, he furthered his theological training at the Trinity School for Ministry in Ambridge, Pennsylvania, USA, enhancing his pastoral and leadership skills.
In 2011, Mutebi was appointed Provost of All Saints’ Cathedral, Kampala, one of Uganda’s largest Anglican congregations. His tenure was marked by strong spiritual leadership and organizational growth.
Assistant Bishop of Kampala Diocese
In August 2013, the House of Bishops of the Church of Uganda elected Hannington Mutebi as the fourth Assistant Bishop of Kampala Diocese. He was officially enthroned on November 10, 2013, succeeding Bishop Zac Niringiye, who had retired the previous year.

Since assuming office, Bishop Mutebi has played a pivotal role in strengthening evangelism, discipleship, church administration, and community outreach programs across Kampala Diocese. He remains a prominent voice in promoting Christian values, family life, education, and national development.
Leadership Beyond the Pulpit
As Chancellor of Ndejje University, Bishop Mutebi continues to influence the next generation through his commitment to academic excellence, ethical leadership, and holistic education. His dual role in both ecclesiastical and educational leadership reflects a lifelong dedication to service, integrity, and the transformation of society.
Today, Bishop Hannington Mutebi is widely regarded as a respected spiritual leader whose ministry continues to impact thousands of lives across Uganda and beyond.
