KAMPALA, UGANDA – Renowned Ugandan human rights lawyer and activist Nicholas Opiyo has been recognized with the prestigious Responsible Investment Global Award by Public Opinions, earning the distinction of Uganda Human Rights Champion in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the promotion of justice, democracy, and the rule of law.

The award celebrates Opiyo’s decades-long commitment to defending fundamental freedoms and advancing human rights in Uganda. It also acknowledges his significant influence on the country’s legal, civic, and social development.

In addition to the award, Opiyo has been nominated for induction into the Public Opinions Journal for Certified Development Champions and Responsible Investments (2026) in appreciation of his contribution to promoting and safeguarding the 30 principles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Widely respected across Uganda and beyond, Opiyo has established himself as one of the country’s leading voices in the defense of human rights. Through strategic litigation, public advocacy, and civic engagement, he has consistently championed the rights of vulnerable and marginalized communities while promoting constitutionalism and democratic governance.

Beyond the courtroom, Opiyo has played a vital role in peacebuilding initiatives, civic education, youth empowerment, and conflict resolution efforts. His work has inspired many young Ugandans to actively participate in public affairs and advocate for their rights, helping to strengthen democratic participation and civic responsibility.

As a strong advocate for accountability and transparency, Opiyo has consistently called for integrity in public service and has been at the forefront of efforts to combat corruption and promote good governance.

According to Public Opinions, Opiyo’s recognition followed an extensive field-based survey conducted across 100 districts of Uganda. During the survey, citizens from different regions overwhelmingly nominated him for his dedication to defending the rights and freedoms guaranteed under the 1995 Constitution of Uganda and international human rights standards.

A significant part of Opiyo’s legacy is reflected through his leadership of Chapter Four Uganda, an independent, non-partisan, and non-profit organization dedicated to protecting civil liberties and civic space. Since its establishment in 2013, Chapter Four Uganda has provided legal support to hundreds of activists, civil society leaders, and ordinary citizens seeking justice and protection of their constitutional rights.

The organization was founded following a feasibility study conducted by distinguished legal experts, including Ashanut Okille, Dr. Kabumba Busingye, and Dan Ngabirano, who identified the need for a specialized institution dedicated to defending civic freedoms and constitutional rights.

Inspired by international civil liberties organizations, Chapter Four Uganda has become a leading defender of freedom of expression, freedom of association, and freedom of peaceful assembly. The organization provides legal assistance without discrimination based on ethnicity, religion, political affiliation, or other social identities.

Among its notable achievements was its legal defense of activists associated with the Black Monday Movement, a campaign against corruption and misuse of public resources. The organization also secured a landmark legal victory in 2022 when the High Court ruled that the NGO Bureau had acted unlawfully in its attempt to indefinitely suspend Chapter Four Uganda.

One of the most significant moments in Opiyo’s legal career came in 2014 when the Constitutional Court nullified the Anti-Homosexuality Act on procedural grounds relating to parliamentary quorum. The case highlighted the importance of constitutional safeguards and the role of public interest litigation in protecting democratic governance.

Today, Chapter Four Uganda continues to focus on protecting civic freedoms, strengthening public interest law, and supporting citizens seeking to exercise their constitutional rights.

As Uganda continues its democratic journey, Nicholas Opiyo’s work remains a powerful example of principled leadership, courage, and dedication to justice. His recognition by Public Opinions underscores the importance of protecting human rights and strengthening accountable governance for future generations.
