Tadashi Yanai is the founder and chief executive of Tokyo-listed retail giant Fast Retailing, the parent company of global clothing brand Uniqlo.

Founded in 1984, Fast Retailing has grown from a single casualwear store in Japan into one of the world’s largest apparel groups, with a portfolio that includes Uniqlo as well as Theory, Helmut Lang, J Brand and GU.

Under Yanai’s leadership, the company has pursued an aggressive international expansion strategy, positioning itself as a major competitor in the global fast-fashion industry.

Fast Retailing reported a net profit of $2.8bn on revenue of $22bn for the fiscal year ended August 2025, driven by strong overseas sales and continued demand for its affordable, minimalist clothing designs.

Its flagship brand, Uniqlo, now operates nearly 2,500 stores across 25 countries, with a growing presence in Asia, Europe and North America. The brand has built its reputation on functional basics, innovative fabrics and a consistent product line aimed at a broad consumer base.

Yanai has repeatedly stated his ambition for Fast Retailing to become the world’s largest apparel retailer, a goal that would require it to surpass long-established rivals such as Sweden’s H&M and Spain’s Inditex, the parent company of Zara. Industry analysts say this target will depend heavily on continued expansion in the US and European markets, as well as maintaining growth momentum in Asia.

Despite increasing competition in the global fast-fashion sector and rising pressure around sustainability and supply chain transparency, Fast Retailing continues to invest in technology, logistics and store expansion as it seeks to strengthen its position in the global retail hierarchy.
