Kyiv, Ukraine – Patriot missile interceptors have become Ukraine’s most sought-after Western-made weapon as Russia intensifies its aerial assault, with the air defence system playing a critical role in protecting cities from nightly missile and drone attacks.
Months of sustained Russian bombardment have significantly depleted Kyiv’s stockpile of the costly US-made interceptors.
However, US President Donald Trump has offered Ukraine a potential lifeline by granting Kyiv a licence to manufacture Patriot missile interceptors domestically, a move that could strengthen the country’s air defence capabilities and reduce its dependence on foreign supplies.

“We’ll give them the right to make Patriots. We’ll show them how to do it. It’s very complex, actually, but you’ll figure out the complexity quickly,” Trump told Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy during a NATO summit in Türkiye on Wednesday. “This way, you can’t complain that we’re not giving them enough.”
Trump did not provide a timeline for when production could begin and said the United States would retain its own stockpile of Patriot interceptors. Ukraine, meanwhile, said it would move as quickly as possible to develop domestic production.
In the near term, however, the announcement is unlikely to have an immediate impact on Ukraine’s battlefield capabilities, according to Nikolay Mitrokhin, a researcher at Germany’s Bremen University.
“In the short-term perspective, Ukraine perhaps gets nothing,” Mitrokhin told Al Jazeera.
He said access to US technology could nevertheless significantly accelerate Ukraine’s efforts to develop its own ballistic and counter-ballistic missile programmes.
Ukraine could also choose to manufacture less expensive and less technologically demanding missiles, a process that could take less than a year, he said.
“However, we can’t rule out that such a programme already exists and has only now been made public,” Mitrokhin added.
Ukraine is expected to focus on producing the interceptor missiles, which form one component of the Patriot air defence system.
A complete Patriot battery also includes missile launchers, a powerful radar and a mobile command-and-control vehicle that enables the system to be relocated to reduce the risk of detection and attack.
A Ukrainian reconnaissance drone hovered about 80 metres above a patch of forest in the contested no-man’s land of the northeastern Kharkiv region. From a bunker dozens of kilometres away, its operator spotted a Russian soldier concealed inside a makeshift foxhole.
The soldier was reportedly part of a new Russian tactic in which small groups of two or three troops infiltrate Ukrainian positions, exploiting gaps in the front line. Military analysts say these smaller units are harder to detect and target than larger formations.


The drone operator, whose live video feed was observed by Al Jazeera from a commander’s laptop, immediately alerted nearby strike-drone operators.
Within a minute, an explosives-laden first-person-view (FPV) drone descended into the foxhole, striking the target. The reconnaissance drone then continued its mission deeper into Russian-held territory.
“I receive feeds from 20 to 30 drones at once,” the unit’s commander told Al Jazeera, declining to reveal his identity, unit or location in line with wartime security protocols.
The incident reflects how drone warfare has transformed the battlefield, replacing the traditional concept of a clearly defined front line where opposing soldiers engage each other directly.
Rise of network-centric warfare
When Russia launched its full-scale invasion in 2022, both armies relied heavily on conventional Soviet-era tactics, deploying tanks, armoured vehicles and artillery in large-scale engagements reminiscent of the Second World War.
Today, however, the conflict has evolved into what military analysts describe as network-centric warfare, where commanders, soldiers and weapons systems are linked through real-time communications to accelerate decision-making and improve battlefield effectiveness.
“Things are moving towards further development of the concept of network-centric warfare,” Pavel Luzin, a military analyst at the Jamestown Foundation, told Al Jazeera.
As Ukraine grapples with mounting manpower shortages and growing challenges in recruiting and retaining troops, its military is increasingly turning to technology to fill the gap.
Ground robots are now being deployed to attack enemy bunkers, operate machine guns, transport ammunition and supplies, and evacuate wounded soldiers from the battlefield.
“If we didn’t have a shortage of soldiers, the generals would still be sending troops to the front line,” Ihor Chaikivsky, head of the Robotic Complexes company in the western city of Ternopil, told Al Jazeera.
“We didn’t want to go to the front line or die in the trenches, so we started using ground robots,” he said.
