The typhoon brought torrential rain and disrupted transportation across the region, with nearly 1,000 flights cancelled in Shanghai alone on Monday.

Although authorities have downgraded Dolphin to a tropical storm, they continue to warn of torrential rainfall, severe flooding and landslides through Wednesday as the storm moves north.

Chinese authorities had earlier issued the highest-level red alert for Dolphin, which was described as the strongest storm to hit China this year.

Dolphin packed maximum sustained winds of 150km/h (94mph) when it made landfall in Yuhuan, Zhejiang province, at 17:30 local time (09:30 GMT) on Sunday. It made a second landfall in the city of Wenzhou about an hour later, according to meteorological authorities.

Heavy rain was forecast on Monday across the provinces of Shandong, Henan, Hubei, Anhui, Jiangsu and Zhejiang, as well as Shanghai.

Authorities have urged people to avoid outdoor activities, while several major tourist attractions have been closed, including parts of Disneyland and Legoland, as well as several viewing platforms along Shanghai’s Bund.

State media footage showed ground-floor businesses flooded in Shanghai’s former French Concession, a popular tourist area, with residents and visitors wading through ankle-deep water.

Several state media outlets reported that a nine-year-old boy from Wenling in Zhejiang province was missing after being swept into the sea. Chinese authorities have not reported any deaths.

Forecasters said parts of Zhejiang could receive between 250mm and 500mm of rain over the coming days.

In Hangzhou, the capital of Zhejiang province, authorities have waived parking fees in public parking facilities for drivers seeking shelter from strong winds and floodwaters.

Elsewhere in Zhejiang province, authorities in Wenzhou have relocated about 900,000 residents and opened more than 1,000 emergency shelters, while around 390,000 people have been evacuated from their homes in Taizhou.

In the coastal province of Fujian, maritime authorities have suspended dozens of passenger ferry routes and halted more than 100 offshore construction projects.

China’s state broadcaster CCTV reported that the storm travelled about 6,000km before making landfall, giving it a lifespan more than three times that of an average typhoon.

CCTV also reported that the storm has an unusually large circulation and is capable of producing intense rainfall.

Misinformation about the storm has reportedly spread rapidly across the Chinese internet, with state media saying two people have been detained for allegedly distributing false content.

One of the suspects, a 60-year-old man, allegedly used artificial intelligence to create a fake video claiming that a person had fallen from a building in Shanghai during the storm.

The second suspect, a 32-year-old man, allegedly re-edited storm footage posted by other social media users in a way authorities deemed misleading.

Before reaching China, Dolphin brought torrential rain to the Philippines, parts of northern Taiwan and Japan’s Okinawa Island.

Eight people have died in the Philippines following heavy monsoon rains brought by Typhoon Dolphin and other storms earlier in the week, according to the Office of Civil Defence. More than 7,000 people are currently sheltering in evacuation centres across the country.

In Japan’s Okinawa prefecture, five elderly people suffered non-life-threatening injuries, according to the prefectural government. Three of them were injured after falling amid strong winds.

Meanwhile, Hong Kong’s weather observatory recorded a record-high temperature of 36.9°C on Sunday as the typhoon swept warm air across the city.

Typhoon season in the western Pacific typically runs from May to October, when tropical cyclones are more common.

This year is experiencing strong El Niño conditions, which experts say can contribute to more intense typhoons.
